Editorial: suicides a growing health threat in Hardin County, but many are reticent to seek help
Suicide is an increasing phenomenon in Hardin County, and such deaths are more than statistics, writes the editorial board of The News-Enterprise in Elizabethtown: “Our neighbors are hurting. Mental illness, depression, substance abuse, desperation, whatever the cause, these are real issues which, without proper attention, can become a preventable death. Some people need medication. Others counseling or another form of professional treatment. In many cases, support groups have help people find ways to cope with their personal demons.”
All people struggling with suicidal ideation need support and encouragement, but many are reticent to seek help, so we must be on watch for unusual behavior and care enough to reach out to our friends, family and neighbors, the board writes.
The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 1-800-273-8255.
