McConnell defends CDC guidelines for school reopening after Trump blasts them; then Pence says they will be made less tough
Differing with President Trump, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Wednesday that school officials should follow the school-reopening guidelines of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Earlier, Trump said he disagrees with the guidelines, saying on Twitter that “They are asking schools to do very impractical things” and are “very tough and expensive.” Later, Vice President Mike Pence said the guidelines would be redrafted so they are not so tough.
McConnell, asked about the issue during an event in Mount Sterling, said “Well, first of all, we ought to follow the CDC guidelines. There’s no question about that.” But he added that he was “not quite sure” what Trump had said, reports Morgan Watkins of the Louisville Courier Journal.
“McConnell also has diverged from Trump on the importance of wearing a mask to help control covid-19,” Watkins notes. Asked if he thinks Gov. Andy Beshear should require Kentuckians to wear masks in public, the senator said, “I’m going to leave that up to him.”
