The 14th annual Markesbery Symposium on Aging and Dementia is set for Sept. 27-28. The event is free and open to the pubic, but registration is required.
The symposium offers two sessions, one for the scientific community and the other for the community. Both events will bring researchers together to share current research findings and the latest updates on dementia, particularly related to Alzheimer’s disease and healthy brain aging.
The scientific session is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 27 from noon to 4 p.m. in the Lee Todd Building at the University of Kentucky. Click here to register for the scientific session.
The community session will be held at The Campbell House in Lexington. It will take place from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 28. There is also an option to attend via Zoom. Click here to register for the community session.
This year’s keynote speakers include Lisa Barnes, associate director of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center in Chicago, and Dr. Charles DeCarli, co-director of the UC Davis Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center in California.
DeCarli will present at both Friday’s scientific session and Saturday’s community session. His Friday session is titled, “Systemic inflammation, endothelial injury, and extracellular vesicle signaling in cerebrovascular disease.” His Saturday session is titled, “Life’s Essential 8: What you can do to improve your brain health.”
Barnes will present during the Saturday session. Her session is titled, “Factors that shape brain health and risk of Alzheimer’s disease in older adults.”
The symposium, hosted by UK’s Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, is named in honor and memory of the late Dr. William R. Markesbery, the founding director of Sanders-Brown.
DeCarli and Barnes will also be joined by various experts from Sanders-Brown giving presentations and hosting panel discussions.
